Guided tour of the Vatican Necropolis

The special visit to the Necropolis beneath the Basilica, where the Tomb of Saint Peter is kept, is a concession that the Fabbrica di San Pietro authorizes from time to time according to an appropriate schedule.

The necessary attention to the conservation of the historical-archaeological site, where the original tomb of the Apostle Peter is kept, allows visits for about 250 visitors per day.

  • Visitors, admitted exclusively from 10 years of age, are divided into groups of about 12 participants according to their language.
  • Each group is accompanied by one of our specialized guides.
  • The visit lasts one hour.
  • The entrance ticket can only be paid by credit card. Cash payments are not accepted.

Visitors are advised that during the visit to the underground Necropolis, they may experience altered environmental conditions of temperature and humidity. Those with particular physical problems, which may worsen under these conditions, including claustrophobia, are advised not to take part in the visit.

Please note that, on the occasion of extraordinary events, the Visits Office reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or reschedule the visit.

Reductions applicable to:

  • Children and young people from 10 to 17 years old

  • Monday to Friday: from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm (last visit at 4:15 pm)
  • Saturday: from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (last visit at 12:15 pm)

CLOSING DAYS

  • Sundays and Vatican public holidays.
  • During the Holy Year 2025, the Necropolis may be exceptionally closed due to jubilee events.
